CONSTRUCTION:
Cut 2 pieces of fabric 9-½” high x 12-½” wide for the body of the bag and cut 4 pieces of fabric ½” x 2-½” for handle tabs. Place the two large pieces on a table in front of you. Cut a 1-½” square out of each of the lower corners using the clear ruler. Measure down 1” from the top edge of each bag piece and 2-7/8” in from each side and make a mark with a pencil. Using the ruler as a guide, make a ½” slit using the razor blade. Begin the slit where you made your mark and go toward the center of the bag.
PRINTING INSTRUCTIONS-IRON-ON TRANSFER:
Print the image onto the iron-on transfer following manufacturer’s directions. Print the size to fit your project. Use only one sheet in the printer at a time for best results. Trim away any excess transfer leaving ¼” of white border on all sides of the image.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS-IRON-ON TRANSFER:
Remove the paper backing from the transfer. Center the image on one bag piece. Position the image 1-½” above the bottom of the bag piece and center it from side to side. Fuse the image to one bag piece following manufacturer’s directions. Be sure and use the parchment paper between the image and the iron. As you proceed through the next steps take care that the IRON NEVER TOUCHES THE TRANSFER or it will melt!
SEWING INSTRUCTIONS:
Place the plain bag piece on a table. Place the piece with the image face down on top of the plain piece. This will be referred to as right sides together. Using a ¼” seam allowance, stitch the bottom seam. Turn right side up and press the seam to one side. Topstitch close to the seam. Turn the bag over and place right sides together. Stitch the side seams using a ¼” seam allowance. To form the corners in the bottom of the bag, with right sides together, pinch the side seam down to meet the bottom seam, lining them up, one on top of another. Stitch using a ¼” seam allowance. Repeat for the other corner.
HANDLE ATTACHMENT INSTRUCTIONS-OPTIONS:
PURCHASED HANDLE: Fold each handle tab in half. Insert the tab through the handle and baste raw edges together. Leave the bag inside out and fold the top edge down 1-¼” and press. BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET THE IRON NEAR THE TRANSFER! Insert the handle tabs through the slits so that the tab bottom becomes hidden in the piece that was turned down. Baste in place. Topstitch ¼” down from the top of the bag. Stitch again close to the raw edge. Remove the basting stitches.
FABRIC HANDLE CONSTRUCTION: For fabric handles, cut 2 pieces of cloth 16” x 2”. Fold the cloth in half lengthwise and stitch using a ½” seam allowance. Trim the seam close to the stitching. Follow instruction above for attaching the handles.
TRIM ATTACHMENT INSTRUCTIONS:
Turn the bag right side out. Place the polka dot trim on top of the feather trim and glue, fuse or stitch in place. Glue, fuse or stitch the feather trim to the upper edge of the bag.
OPTIONAL:Cut a piece of plastic needlepoint canvas 7-½” x 3” to fit into the bottom of the bag. Trim as necessary to fit.
